image One Day I Will Be Forty

Spread the love

One day I will be forty

In the future, years away

One day I will be grown

My life, well underway.

But first I have to learn

How to move into a crawl

How to pull myself up straight

And not let myself fall.

Next I need to know

How to add up and subtract

Trying hard to study

And ignore things that distract.

Then I’m going to start

To dance away the night

Wearing my highest heels

Awake ‘til it’s almost light.

And now I’m in a suit

Ready to start my first day

Trying to hide my nerves

As I wish myself away.

And then will come the time

When I decide to share my life

When I stop being a ‘miss’

And become somebody’s wife.

But then arrives the best day

And brings with it my girl

Life is thrown upside down

In a wonderful, chaotic whirl.

One day I will be forty

And now that time is here

Today I feel so lucky

To hold so much so dear.

  1. I love this! It’s 3 years away for me still but I am (sort of) actually looking forward to it … laying out the milestones as you have is such a lovely way to realise how far we’ve come 🙂 #Prose4Thought

  2. Thank you. Turning 40 was far easier than turning 30, I think having my daughter now means I think ‘what else could I need’? I hope you enjoy your 40th just as much 🙂 x
